The Ohio State football team has had great success in recent years. With success comes more opportunities for assistant coaches. Can Ryan Day keep his team together?
The Ohio State football team has a lot of good assistants under Ryan Day. They are a big part of the reason Day has succeeded so far in two full years as a head coach. The Buckeyes have done a really good job of keeping their staff together. Can Day go on like this?
There are a few assistants who are candidates to move on and possibly secure a head coach position in the next few years. Linebacker coach Al Washington is definitely one of those guys. He will surely move up to a defensive coordinator soon if Day doesn’t give him one.
The only way Day would do this is if Kerry Coombs struggles again. Coombs will have a chance as the only DC this season. If he struggles, Washington could replace him or join him as Co-DC. He’s probably the biggest candidate to move on.
Brian Hartline is also a hot name. Hartline has done a truly phenomenal job recruiting and developing wide receivers since taking over from Zach Smith in 2018. Hartline has been the top recruiter outside of Ryan Day on the entire coaching staff.
The challenge for Day will be to keep all of these guys together. Change is inevitable when it comes to the coaching carousel. The Buckeyes will be successful as long as Day is able to keep the current staff together. It might only last a year or two longer.
Day seems like a great coach to work for, so none of these assistants leave unless they really have better job offers. For the sake of the state of Ohio, I hope it isn’t for a few more years.
