Bronx, NY – The Sports Business Institute (SBI) hosted a week-long sports career camp for high school students June 21-24 at Fordham University Westchester Campus in West Harrison, NY.
Students registered for the week-long event were high school students from the New York metropolitan area and other parts of the United States, including two from Florida (including IMG Academy). Speakers included industry executives from the USTA, Washington Commanders, WFAN, CBS Sports, WFUV Sports, Fordham Athletics, Skyline Conference Commissioner Linda Bruno; Sports media personality and former New York Rangers Tom Laidlaw and Associated Press NFL Dean Sportswriter Barry Wilner.
Fordham Athletics is an initial partner of SBI. “We are thrilled with this partnership, and it was just a great event for students to come and visit our campus and learn from these excellent industry leaders,” said Anthony Davidson, Dean of the School. Professional and Continuing Education from Fordham. University.
“We are absolutely thrilled with this event,” said Dave Torromeo, Executive Director of SBI. “The quality of these students was amazing. They were totally busy asking relevant questions while soaking up career advice from the best of the best in the industry.”
This program is one of many and was created for high school students interested in pursuing a college career that would lead to employment in sports. The four-day event covered a wide range of topics and perspectives shared by industry leaders, educators, directors and other sports influencers.
Highlights included a panel of sporting directors, including Fordham’s sporting director Ed Kullwho shared insights into various challenges of being a college student-athlete and their roles regarding Title IX, NIL, and the overall student-athlete experience.
“It was a great experience to be part of the SBI Career Camp,” said Ed Kull. “The students were engaging and interactive and it was an honor to be included and share the stage with my industry colleagues. I look forward to working even more with SBI in the future.”
The program concluded with a guided tour organized by ANC Sports (Learfield/IMG), a world leader in video and LED signage and marketing, and all students received certificates from Fordham University and SBI.
Former New York Ranger, True Grit author, podcaster and Survivor contestant Tom Laidlaw was one of the luncheon’s keynote speakers. WFAN host Rick Wolff shared his expertise on youth sports and sports psychology.
Other highlights include longtime industry media executive Len DeLuca and media personalities such as WFUV’s Bobby Ciafardini and Rob Adams.
