Lethamhill: a golf center in Glasgow serving the squash tennis phenomenon

An upgraded COMMUNITY golf center will now host a booming sporting phenomenon.

R&A’s plan at Lethamhill in Glasgow to redevelop the existing golf course will include three permanent padel courts.

Padel, which combines tennis and squash, is said to be one of the fastest growing participatory sports in the world.

R&A is working with Game4Padel to set up the courts, as well as shorter form golf courses, an adventure golf course, and a two-story, 52-bay lighted driving range.

Plans were submitted to Glasgow City Council in February to transform the site, which will hopefully feature a cafe, retail space and nursery as part of a central hub with views north over nearby Hogganfield Loch, over Campsie Fells and Glasgow.

Recent updates to the plans now include the addition of nature trails, a new visitor center for the Seven Lochs Wetlands Park, a community orchard and a public space for pop-up events, as well as a dedicated padel area. Glasgow Timetables:

Martin Slumbers, Managing Director of The R&A, said: “We have a very clear goal of making golf more accessible and inclusive for people of all ages and backgrounds.

“To achieve this, we need to broaden our appeal by offering a greater variety of fun and affordable activities that appeal to our target audience and attract more families and young people.

“Padel fits perfectly in these respects and we are delighted to be working with Game4Padel to incorporate three all-season courts into Lethamhill’s revised plans. ”

Padel is similar to tennis, but players serve under the arms which means it is much easier for beginners. Its investors include sports stars Zinedine Zidane, Rafael Nadal, Lionel Messi and Maria Sharapova, as well as former tennis world number one Andy Murray.
