Rebels confirm major training overhaul for Super Rugby Trans-Tasman | Latest news on rugby

The Melbourne Rebels have confirmed that Kevin Foote will take over as interim head coach of Super Rugby Trans-Tasman.

The announcement comes after head coach Dave Wessels stepped down last week after the club’s fourth place in Super Rugby AU.

Foote, who was the club’s defensive coach, co-coached Perth Spirit in 2014 alongside Wessels, before taking over in 2017.

Rebels CEO Baden Stephenson believes Foote would bring much needed stability to the position and the club.

“Kevin is thrilled to have had the opportunity to take on the role of interim head coach and looks forward to the Trans-Tasman Series,” he said in a statement.

“He is well respected and has a great relationship with the playgroup and other staff.

“The Board of Directors and management consider this appointment a natural progression in his time at the Club and look forward to seeing him take on this new role with the great energy and professionalism for which he is known.”

Rebels score fastest try in Super Rugby history

The club have also confirmed that Shaun Berne will not continue as an attacking coach for the Trans-Tasman competition.

Berne, who was the Wallabies’ attacking coach for the 2019 World Cup, joined the Rebels in 2018 after a stint with the Western Force.

“Shaun is a great rugby player and we are eternally grateful for his contribution to our club on and off the pitch over the past four years,” added Stephenson.

While at the club he helped us reach our first finals, and was also called up to the Wallabies staff for the 2019 Rugby World Cup which was a tremendous recognition and reward for his experience and hard work. to the Melbourne Rebels and throughout his coaching career.

“We wish him the best for his next challenge and thank him for his commitment to the Rebels.”

Wallabies Coaching staff will work closely with the Rebels in the short term in Bern’s absence, with current forwards coach Geoff Parling retaining his role as defense coach.
