Bellator 201 in June has their main co-event in Couture vs Awad, joining Ilima-Lei Macfarlane vs Alejandra Lara.
Ryan Couture returns to the Bellator MMA cage next month, when he takes on Saad Awad in the Bellator 201 co-main event. Couture, son of UFC Hall of Fame double-weight champion Randy Couture, s ‘was last beaten at the Bellator NYC in June of last year. He’s been on the shelf ever since. MMA Fighting first reported the news.
Couture (11-5) made his debut under Scott Coker’s former home, Strikeforce. He broke a 6-1 promotion record before he was picked up by the UFC. However, the younger Couture went 0-2 at the same time his legendary father had an argument with UFC president Dana White. White sadly forbade Randy to corner his son after the Hall of Fame fighter went into business with Bellator. Shortly after, Ryan received his walking papers.
A brief stint in the regions under the Battlegrounds MMA banner led Couture to sign with Bellator MMA, and ultimately reunite with former boss Scott Coker. As of this writing, he’s 3-2 with the company and comes off a win over Haim Gozali last year.
Interestingly, Neiman Gracie mentioned Couture as a fighter he would face the upcoming Bellator 198 with. However, the promotion chose not to go with the angle of family versus family.
Saad Awad (22-9), meanwhile, has won his last three fights before Bellator 201. Fighting regularly for promotion since 2013 (he had a one-off fight at Bellator 10 in 2009), the San Bernardino native will be in his own backyard while confronting Couture.
Bellator 201 will take place at the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, CA on June 29.
